The history of the Wulmenau estate begins in the 14th century. It is mentioned as a Marquart von Crumesse, who sold it to a Lübeck councillor. The remaining core parts of the Trenthorst-Wulmenau double estate (approx. 660 ha) were transferred to the Max Planck Society in 1951 and were subsequently used by various state institutions. Since 2008 it has been home to the Thünen Institute, which is part of the business area of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
