Meldorf is the small, charming town in the heart of Dithmarschen. It has traces of the Middle Ages. The cathedral is one of the most important early Gothic buildings on the west coast.

Meldorf received city rights in 1265 and was the main town of Dithmarschen in the Middle Ages. The town of Meldorf was devastated in both 1403 and 1500. A fire destroyed the southern half of the town in 1538. A Latin school was founded in 1540, from which today's Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule emerged. See: www.stadt-meldorf.de
