A ruin. You can look at it, but you can also walk past it.

The former hunting lodge of Prince-Bishop Dietrich Adolph von der Recke is a listed building and is now owned by the Catholic parish of St. Johannes Nepomuk. The historic half-timbered building is now a Hövelhof landmark and a popular photo backdrop. The castle gardens are a great place to linger. The Hövelhof Tourist Information and the Ems Cycle Path office are located in the adjacent building.

The Kohlstädt castle ruins, also known as the Kleine Herrenburg, are a historical monument that were probably built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It is located in the southern Teutoburg Forest, more precisely in the Lippe town of Kohlstädt in the municipality of Schwerte, near the banks of the Strothe stream. The ruin stands today as evidence of various uses over the centuries, including practical applications such as an iron smelter or a lime kiln, but also mythical interpretations such as a pagan church from pre-Christian times or a tower of the Veleda. In 1704, treasure diggers who searched the site for hidden treasures using special rituals were punished. Historically, the castle served as a customs and supply station that protected and controlled the pass over the Kleine Egge and the crossing point on Sennehellweg. The architectural remains of the castle show sturdy, almost 2.40 meter thick masonry with defensive slots that were typical of the time. The walls were built using a special technique called fake herringbone pattern. Remains of the square defensive tower, which led to the upper floors via a spiral staircase, are still visible today. In addition, the foundations of an outbuilding attached to the tower have been preserved. Kohlstädt Castle was built as an early medieval tower castle on an artificially raised hill. The approximately square residential tower originally had sides of around 12 meters and walls that were 2.40 meters thick. A large living area with a hearth was attached to the residential tower. The castle's function as a pass barrier over the Egge Mountains was taken over by the larger castles Horn and Falkenburg in the 14th century, after which the complex was abandoned. Today the ruin is not open to entry due to its dilapidation, but viewing from the outside is possible without restrictions and free of charge. The castle is located on Lippspringer Straße and is easily accessible for those interested via the B1 from Paderborn towards Detmold.

The Senne has always been particularly rich in game. Since the Lippe sovereigns had a great interest in hunting, they built their hunting lodge here on the edge of the Senne. In addition, the state claim in this remote part of Lippe "behind the mountains of the Teutoburg Forest" should be asserted and substantiated. The castle was built from a dairy farm that had existed since the year 850. 1599 was ruled by Simon the VI. commissioned conversion of the complex into a hunting lodge has been completed. The impressive overall complex of hunting lodge and dairy measured a total of 92 meters in width and 153 meters in length. The complex was surrounded by a moat and could only be reached via a drawbridge, which was intended to ensure that it could be defended in the otherwise unprotected location on the Senne plain. In addition, there were loopholes in the walls. The southern corners of the hunting lodge complex were secured by two round towers and farm buildings stood along the entire west side. The moat is now silted up or filled in, except for the southern section. The hunting lodge was used for the stately hunting and festival parties and as travel accommodation. In addition, negotiations between the County of Lippe and the Bishopric of Paderborn were held here in a convenient location halfway. During the Thirty Years' War, both Protestant and Catholic military leaders were present as guests. Nevertheless, the castle and the dairy were plundered twice during the war years 1633/34. 36 cows were slaughtered and 100 horses stolen. After the end of the war, however, Count Hermann Adolf zur Lippe had the hunting lodge expanded on a large scale due to the rich stock of game. Instead of the old half-timbered building, a large stone castle was built. In the 18th century, the Oesterholz hunting lodge lost its importance. The Lopshorn hunting lodge near Augustdorf increasingly took its place. Interest in hunting also declined. Due to the neglect, the complex fell into disrepair, so that today only remnants remain. While the typical Weser Renaissance half-timbered building to the left of the archway has been preserved, the actual stone castle building to the right of it was removed in 1775. The building materials were used in the construction of the "Zur Rose" spa house in Meinberg. The dairy buildings also disappeared later. The other buildings were then leased out as a farm and used as a head forester's office. Today the old people's home is housed in the former "count's room" to the left of the gate.

For centuries, a hilltop castle stood atop Falkenberg in the Teutoburg Forest, one of the largest medieval dynastic castles in Westphalia. Falkenburg Castle once served as the seat of power in Lippe. But that was a long time ago. Before excavations began in 2004, Falkenburg Castle was just an inconspicuous ruin, a popular destination for Sunday family outings and hikes. No one would have guessed back then that such an impressive and imposing castle complex lay hidden underground. It was all the more wonderful to see how these ruins grew year after year, revealing their secrets. You can find more detailed information here: https://www.falkenburg-lippe.de/

The Falkenburg ruins are located in the southeastern part of the Teutoburg Forest (called Lippischer Wald) in the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park, around one kilometer south-southeast of Johannaberg, a southern part of the southern Detmold district of Berlebeck. It is located about 1.7 km as the crow flies north-northeast of the Gauseköte (see below) on a 372.6 m high neighboring crest of the 700 meters northeast of Stembergs (401.9 m), which over a 337 m high mountain saddle with a forest path branch to 339, 6 m high. About 5.5 km southeast of the ruin is the seam line to the south-facing Egge Mountains in the Silberbachtal.
