    The Falkenburg lies as a ruin on a strategically favorable hilltop above the Osing Pass, known as "Gauseköte". It was built from 1194. In 1453 a fire severely damaged the castle and the complex lost its importance when the moated castle in Detmold was expanded into the residence of the Lippe counts from 1528. After that the castle was used as a quarry. The ruins can only be visited on pre-booked tours.

      For centuries, a hilltop castle stood on the Falkenberg in the Teutoburg Forest, one of the largest medieval dynastic castles in Westphalia.
      Falkenburg Castle once served as the seat of the rulers of Lippe. But that was a long time ago.
      Before excavations began in 2004, Falkenburg Castle was nothing more than an inconspicuous ruin, the destination for Sunday family outings and hiking days. No one would have thought back then that such an impressive and massive castle complex lay hidden underground.
      It was all the more beautiful to see how this ruin grew year after year and revealed its secrets.

        Open again and beautifully restored - finally without latent bad conscience, because you squeezed yourself through the fence 😁, explore all the walls. Anyone who knows the Falkenburg from the old days before the restoration, when just a half-meter tower towered out of the ground, would probably never have guessed how far the walls under the hill spread. Compliments to all involved in the work of recent years!
        @ all visitors: Please stick to the few rules of manners and do not step on the walls - there are enough paths in between, you can get that everywhere 🙂

                  A worthwhile goal. Many nice hiking possibilities. But it is by no means recommended to walk parts of the hike along Paderborber Straße. There are no roads, and the cars just drive way too fast. At the moment not - because of the blocking of the Gauseköte, but basically already.

                                                  The construction of the Falkenburg, of which only a ruin can be seen today, was initiated between 1190 and 1194 by Bernhard II and his son Hermann II, noble lords of the Lippe.

Due to the Everstein feud (1403-1407), Duke Heinrich I of Brunswick was imprisoned in the castle for a long time. In the middle of the 15th century, a fire destroyed the already large complex, which consisted of a main bailey, a bailey and a ward. Under Princess Pauline zur Lippe, parts of the castle were used to expand the Gauseköte, and the residents of Berlebeck also used many of the castle's stones to build the foundations of their houses. The ruin is now owned by Stephan Prinz zur Lippe, a direct descendant of the builders. At the end of 2004, the development association Die Falkenburg e. V. for the preservation and renovation of the castle, archaeological excavations have been taking place on the ruins since 2005. In 2016, Stephan zur Lippe was awarded the German Prize for Monument Protection (Silver Hemisphere) by the German National Committee for Monument Protection for his commitment to the building and archaeological monument.
