The Starhemberg castle ruins, once a significant site north of Dreistetten, have an eventful history. Originally a Styrian fortress, it fell to the Babenbergs in 1192 and was expanded into a palace under Frederick the Quarrelsome. After his death, the Teutonic Order administered it for a short time before it passed into Habsburg ownership in 1278. In 1482, the castle was captured by King Matthias Corvinus. From 1590, it belonged to the Counts of Heussenstein for over 200 years and survived the Turkish onslaught in 1683. Around 1800, it was covered over to avoid taxes and has remained in ruins ever since. Today, it is owned by the Salvator Habsburg-Lothringen family. Officially, access is prohibited, but the imposing walls and the view make it a popular destination for hikers.

When I do my daily training ride, I always pass it, or rather, I cycle around it below. Like the golf course, the castle grounds are not accessible to cyclists.

Privately owned and unfortunately very difficult to see from the outside. In 1125, the Klosterneuburg register of accounts mentions an existing manor house with the name "Vridrich de Engelscalcsesuelede". The castle, which was originally surrounded by water, was probably built around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1963, Baron Hubert von Pantz acquired the estate and founded Golfpark Enzesfeld GmbH, which thoroughly renovated the country estate and operated a country club with riding stables, tennis courts and outdoor pool on the site. The current owner, Georg H. Schnura, an internationally active German business consultant, bought the dilapidated castle, including the park and outbuildings, in 2003 and had it renovated from the ground up over the course of ten years at great expense and with great attention to detail. Archduke Leopold Ludwig inherited the property in 1854. Hernstein Castle owes its current appearance to him. He spent 28 years rebuilding and expanding the castle according to plans by Theophil Hansen, who is also the architect of the Parliament in Vienna. Since 2023, the Hotel Schloss Hernstein has been run as a public hotel and is a popular wedding location. More on the history: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Hernstein

Very large ruin in which there is a lot to discover, unfortunately it is currently closed due to the risk of collapse and entry is prohibited. It's a shame... But you can also take great photos from the outside.
