We hiked to the chapel in August 2025. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially for the last few meters to the chapel. We were well-equipped, so it wasn't a problem for us. Once you reach the destination, you're rewarded with a magnificent view. Sunscreen and plenty of water are essential in Crete—especially in summer.

Very, very rewarding. I personally climbed the summit in snow (mid-May). The last part from Skala to Mytika was absolutely not easy and requires experience hiking and climbing in less than optimal conditions, at least in snow. The summit is still highly recommended and is certainly a lot easier in season. :)

Great hike with a wonderful view from the mountain village of Zia to the summit with a beautiful chapel below. The trail has an alpine character in places, so it's better to wear sturdy shoes and plan enough time (3-4 hours) as well as enough water (there are no springs etc.) and if necessary, take a jacket etc. in the off-season (cold wind up there)! Great mountain hike with fantastic views. Everything can be easily reached by bus from Kos town.

At 846 m, Dikeos is the highest mountain on Kos. The starting point is the small mountain village of Zia, from which it takes around two hours to get to the summit (around 4 km and 500 meters in altitude). The path is partly signposted. Just below the summit is the Dikeos Christos chapel.

The climb to Crete's highest mountain is certainly one of the highlights of a holiday on the island. The shortest and best route starts at the Mygero Refuge (an investment ruin, a shame). At the beginning the path is clearly visible (paved), later it becomes more confusing. You should plan on 5 - 6 hours for the journey there and back, there is an altitude difference of around 850 meters. Sufficient water and weatherproof clothing are a given. But the mountain is also a real eye-catcher from a distance. Before you start the climb, get weather information. A dream route with sun and little wind.

It's worth the steep climb just for the views along the coast and the island.
