    Climb to the roof of CRETE, climb the highest mountain, the "Psiloritis" (2456m), climbing just under 5km/900m (category black/difficult). Very few people, just a few nice pilgrims and hikers. During a half-hour break on the summit, the weather changed quite quickly, as often happens around midday, and the summit was completely covered in clouds. Without a hiking GPS, the way back is quite difficult, so this is recommended...

      The Psiloritis Massif or Idagebirge (Greek Ίδη Idi, f. Sg.) Is one of the three over 2,000 meters high mountain massifs of the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete. It is located in central Crete, southwest of the capital Heraklion.

      The highest peak of the massif is with 2456 meters of Psiloritis (gr. Ληλορείτης (m., Sg.), Dt., 'High mountain'), after the summit chapel and Timios Stavros (Τίμιος Σταυρός, 'Venerable Cross') called. It is surrounded by four other mountain peaks with over 2200 meters altitude: the Agathias (ο Αγκαθιάς) with 2424 meters, the Stolistra (η Στολίστρα) with 2325 meters, the Voulomenou (η Βουλομένου) with 2267 meters and the Koussakas (ο Κούσσακας) with 2209 meters. The ancient name of the mountains Ida is partially reused today. He made use of the name of the Nida Plateau, which preserved the name of the mountain mentioned in ancient scriptures. In Greek mythology, the massif is one of the birthplaces of the godfather Zeus.

        Fantastic landscape. The tour from Lakkos Migeris there and back is not possible with 4 hours. At most by well-trained alpinists. The descent takes as long as the ascent through the scree on the slope. Hiking sticks are recommended for safety. I didn't make it to the top. We left too late and at the end of May, late in the afternoon, thick, wet and cold fog with visibility of 15m max. Temperature above well below 10 degrees and sharp wind. To be on the safe side, I descended again, especially since storms and rain had been announced. Try again next time
