There are different substrates on both sides of the canal. On the western side there is a more rustic subsoil, on the eastern side there is an asphalt surface.
The artificial lake was built in the 1980s as a cooling water basin for the Emsland nuclear power plant, twelve kilometers away. It is about two kilometers long and just over a kilometer wide at its widest point.
Transition from Ems and Dortmund-Ems-Kanal. On the one side the "Hotel zum Wasserfall" and on the "Alte Fahrt" the Schleusencafé, which attracts numerous cyclists and walkers on the weekend.
