The Kaiserweg (Emperor's Way) stretches for approximately 100 kilometers from Bad Harzburg via Walkenried and Nordhausen to Tilleda in the Kyffhäuser Mountains. It runs primarily along the mountain ridges – from the northern to the southern Harz Mountains. The trail is named after Emperor Henry IV, who fled from the Saxons at Harzburg Castle in 1074 and sought refuge in the monasteries of the southern Harz Mountains and in the small town of Tilleda. Sehusa Castle is the original name of today's Seesen Castle and the seat of the district court. It was first documented in 974, when Otto II donated it to the Gandersheim Abbey—presumably as a dowry for his daughter Sophie.
