The Hausmannsturm was built as a defense and watchtower outside the actual castle complex, as the elevations of the Salzgitter mountain range in the north of the castle could not be seen. Attacking troops could thus be identified and fought at an early stage. For many generations it has been a popular observation tower with a view of the Brocken.
In summer 2005, large parts of the masonry could be renovated. The top of the wall was protected against the weather and the niches in the interior of the tower were restored.
