Always nice to ride the Ponale especially out of season. Few bikes and few people, a spectacle.

The large entrance hall of this cave conceals a deep, dark mouth, filled by an underground stream that is always well-fed, even in dry periods. This is the entrance—reserved for cave divers—to a vast and intricate network of cavities deep within the mountain. The water is actually clear, and it is thought that the name derives from the dark moss-covered floor, over which the stream flows before flowing into the Senaiga. Due to the cave's complex morphology and technical difficulties, exploration began only in the 1970s, and so far, cave divers have discovered a 1,600-meter stretch of siphons and difficult passages. In the 1930s, dye injections proved that this cave communicates with the Castello Tesino Caves, a few kilometers away. Furthermore, an examination of the fine sand found inside, rich in granite crystals, testifies to a significant contribution of water coming from the Cima d'Asta group, much higher and much more distant!

The Ponale road (in Italian: Strada del Ponale) was blasted into the rock in the second half of the 19th century to connect the northern western shore of Lake Garda and Riva del Garda with the Val di Ledro (in German: Ledro Valley). For decades, the old Ponal road was one of the most important access routes to the northern part of Lake Garda.

Here, on the Via Nuova, you get a nice first view and impression of the Varone waterfall! For 7 euros entry and enough time, you can of course see more of it. Unfortunately, the location is already very touristy: https://www.cascata-varone.com/de/varone-wasserfall.htm

Oolite stone quarries dug in the Vastrè hills. The extracted stone, called "statuary stone", was used above all for portals, fountains and statues as it is easily workable. The stone extracted from the quarries was used to create statues that adorn the Taro bridge in Parma, the fountain in Piazza Duomo in Trento, the statues that adorn the Prato della Valle in Padua, some statues found in the Collegiate Church of Arco and the statue of Moses located in the square of Arco. I advise you to enter the quarries and tackle the route inside. The location is truly very suggestive and I would say unique. The extraction planes are inclined about 30° towards the west and in the middle there are rock columns which were used to prevent the roof from collapsing.
