A beautiful view in both directions across the Spree River to Schöneweide. Among other things, the old industrial buildings are visible. Incidentally, the name "Kaisersteg" (Emperor's Bridge) in Berlin-Schöneweide is a reminder of the time of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Back then, a pedestrian bridge already existed at this location to transport workers from the burgeoning industrial plants, such as the Oberspree Cable Works (KWO) and the AEG factories, to their workplaces. The current bridge is a modern successor to this historic connection across the Spree.

Unfortunately, the new bridge, built in 2007, bears no resemblance whatsoever to the original. The delicate iron truss structure, designed by Heinrich Müller-Breslau (one of the leading structural engineers of his time), was blown up in the final days of World War II and was considered one of the most significant achievements of engineering around 1900. Berlin Wall 1961-1989 At this spot, on February 12, 1987, two young men attempted to escape across the Berlin Wall to West Berlin. Lutz Schmidt, 24, died in a hail of bullets from East German border guards. Peter Schulze managed to escape.” On February 12, 1987, colleagues Lutz Schmidt and Peter Schulze were planning to escape to the West during a night shift. Due to foggy weather, they nearly drove into a patrol car while driving a truck on Rheingoldstrasse in the Altglienicke border area. Their evasive maneuver resulted in the truck becoming stuck. They left the truck with two ladders and headed toward the border fence. When they triggered the alarm on the signal fence, they had to leave one ladder behind. Lutz Schmidt helped Peter Schulze climb the wall and was himself hit by a border guard bullet. He died in the death strip.
