The impressive new Baumschulenweg crematorium, built in 1999, with the appearance that reminds me of an industrial plant, even received the “Concrete” architecture prize in the same year. Many interesting facts, including pictures and videos (including one entitled “The work of the crematorium”) can be found at https://www.krematorium-berlin.de/index.php.

Georg Béla Pniower (1896-1960) was a gardener, landscape architect and professor of garden and regional culture in Berlin. Pniower worked for the Berlin companies Späth and Rothe as a senior garden architect from 1922 to 1925 and worked as a consultant for the Provincial Association of Allotment Gardeners of Greater Berlin. After the end of the war, Georg Pniower became a full professor of garden art and landscape design at the Free University and later at the Humboldt University. In 1960 he was awarded his doctorate. His work in Berlin includes the summer flower garden in Treptower Park, which was created in 1959.

The Königsheide is a remnant of the wooded area between the neighboring city of Berlin, Kölln, and Köpenick, which the Kölln family was allowed to use as a supplier of firewood. In 1709 the Köllnische Heide came into the possession of Berlin. A large part of the forest area was later added. All that remains are the Königsheide between Baumschulenweg and Johannisthal, Treptower Park, Plänterwald and a small forest area of the same name between Adlershof and Oberspree. The A. S. Makarenko children's home was opened on the edge of the Königsheide in 1953 and was only closed in 1998. In the meantime, the building has been converted into a residential complex, but its outward appearance has been preserved.
