The Maxsee, southwest of Hoppegarten in Müncheberg, is a real gem in the Brandenburg landscape. It covers 68 hectares, and if you want to stroll around it, you can be sure that there is a lot to discover. In summer, when the forest that almost completely surrounds the lake is lush green and the water glitters in the sun, the walk almost feels like a little vacation. Reed beds, rubble forest and swampy areas characterize the bank landscape. The Löcknitz - or as they say here, the Mühlenfließ - runs through the lake and gives the entire area its typical Brandenburg face. Not far from the bank is the “Neue Mühle” manor house. Historical and impressive, a little journey through time in the middle of the countryside. And while you're hiking, you can watch the anglers, engrossed, looking for perch, pike or even the odd carp. There's a lot of activity here at the weekend, but during the week you can really enjoy the lake and its tranquility. But it's not just nature that's a highlight here. The variety of fish is not without it. Perch, carp and pike, even pike-perch have already attracted anglers here. Sure, there's a lot of fishing going on at the weekend. But during the week you can choose your spot and fish in peace. One more thing: the islands in the middle of the lake? It's better to leave them alone. They belong to the birds and nature. But with a boat, without a motor of course, you can go for a little spin.

There are different statements about the first documentary mention. An information board from the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund near the building states that it was first mentioned in a document in 1317. A water mill was first mentioned in 1745. The "Neue Mühle" estate on the Maxsee was first mentioned in 1317. The owners included the bankers Georg von Siemens and Max Steinthal. The latter was a director and board member of Deutsche Bank. At the end of the 19th century, Deutsche Bank financed the Berlin elevated and underground railways under his leadership. After the war from 1948 to 1990, the mill was, among other things, a holiday home for the NDPD in the GDR. The estate has been privately owned since 2000. The purchase price went to the descendants of the Steinthal family.

The beautiful Maxsee (formed in the Ice Age: in the mouth of a side valley of a meltwater channel), surrounded by beautiful forests, through which the Löcknitz flows, definitely a great bathing lake, is now used by dozens of cranes as a stopover in autumn. Lots of beaver tracks on the south side.

Strictly speaking, the lake, commonly referred to as the Maxsee, consists of two parts of the water: the actual, approx. 68 ha large Maxsee and the peat burying to the north with an area of around 30 ha. Despite the upper reaches of the Löcknitz (Hoppegartener Fließ), the Maxsee will probably be closed a large part fed directly from groundwater. The Löcknitz (still called Mühlenfließ here), which flows off to the west, receives a somewhat larger water input after approx. 1.6 km from the Stöbberbach, which comes from the Roten Luch. Around the year 1414, the mill that gave the Mühlenfließ its name was built on the Maxsee outflow. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the banker and chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank Max Steinthal owned an estate of 170 hectares in the Maxsee settlement, which stretched from the settlement to the lake. From 1948 to 1990 the "Neue Mühle" estate was a holiday property of the NDPD of the GDR. The estate has been privately owned since 2000. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxsee
