Emmaus Church in Borna. Information: Dating from the 13th century. Previously located in Heuersdorf; the entire structure was moved to Borna in one piece in 2007. A place of worship for peace prayers and exhibitions.

St. Mary's Church in Borna. Information: This important late Gothic building from the 15th century incorporates the Romanesque core of the 13th-century predecessor. The inscription on the southeast pillar of the chancel recounts that the foundation stone for the Gothic hall church was laid on the Thursday after Pentecost in 1411.

A very beautiful floodplain landscape with a great cycle path

Very beautiful scenery, with lots to explore. Good bike paths and rest stops.

Unfortunately, St. Mary's Church was closed, but the small Emmaus Church opposite was open, so I was able to offer my prayer in vocal form (opening hymn, Sanctus, and closing hymn from Franz Schubert's German Mass).

Very chic in a small town

The last service at the old location took place on Easter Monday 2007. After that, the extensive preparations and safety measures for the transport began. First, the entire inventory of the church was removed. Then the fieldstone walls, which threatened to fall apart during transport due to the irregular connection, were pressed together with foam mortar and additionally fixed on the outside with 5 massive steel belts and supported on the inside with a steel frame. The roof structure and the bell tower were stiffened with a total of 12 m³. The entire church was then separated from the foundation in one piece and lifted 1.5 meters out of the ground using hydraulic rams. The building, weighing 665 tons, was then placed on a special vehicle with 40 axle lines and an output of 800 hp and was able to start its journey to Borna on October 23, 2007. After crossing two railway lines and the rivers Pleiße and Whyra, the church finally reached its new location on Reformation Day 2007, as planned, after passing the last narrow section at Martin Luther Square in Borna with a clearance of 2 centimetres to the left and right. The transport costs amounted to around 3 million euros. The church was able to reopen at Easter the following year after extensive renovation work.
