Masserberg is the perfect stop for a tour. There are good restaurants and sights to visit.

At the confluence of the Erle and Nahe rivers, in the heart of the medieval town of Schleusingen, stands the mighty Bertholdsburg Castle. From the 13th century onward, it served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg and is the oldest residential palace in Thuringia. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the fortified castle was rebuilt into an early modern palace in the Renaissance style. Today, the castle houses the Natural History Museum. Very impressive building!

In Masserberg, there is a viewing point overlooking the upper lake of the Goldisthal pumped-storage power plant, which was built on a hilltop. This is what a giant battery looks like. The operator writes about it: "The Goldisthal pumped-storage power plant is the largest pumped-storage power plant in Germany. It has been in operation since 2004. It is located in the western Thuringian Slate Mountains on the Schwarza River. The cavern power plant has an installed capacity of 1,060 megawatts (MW). It is still one of the largest and most modern power plants of its kind in Europe. The upper reservoir has a capacity of 13 million cubic meters of working water, sufficient for approximately nine hours of full-load turbine operation. The power plant takes about 100 seconds to go from standstill to full capacity (1,060 MW). Its rapid availability makes it an important component of the energy transition, as it can respond quickly to the highly fluctuating feed-in of renewable energies. What can I say – I would rather advise against the actually quite beautifully situated Triniusbaude and its completely grumpy landlord.

It's always amazing what people are capable of when they focus on the beautiful things. Building bridges and not tearing them down.

The Bertholdsburg is definitely worth a look. There are stone dinosaurs much more to marvel at. All I can say is, make sure you check it out👍
