Fallen from the First World War

The Schminke House, a factory owner's house in Löbau in Upper Lusatia built between 1932 and 1933 by the architect Hans Scharoun (1893–1972), is considered one of the most important German architectural creations of the interwar period.

On the stele, which is modeled on a post mile post with four sides, the three towns of Sohland, Taubenheim and Wehrsdorf, which today make up the municipality, each have their own side and are immortalized there with a coat of arms and first mention. The fourth side is dedicated to the present-day municipality of Sohland an der Spree, which has existed in this form since March 1, 1994. This date and the years of first mention are inscribed on the granite column, which weighs around eleven tons and is intended to reflect a little of the history. Like a post mile post, the stele is also decorated with straight-line distances to notable destinations such as Prague, Schluckenau, Zittau, Görlitz, Bautzen, Berlin and Dresden.
