The monument, created by the Dresden sculptors Köppl and Polte, was originally intended to be erected in May 1913 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city fire. City fortifications from the late 13th century. The Fronfeste, or gate tower of the former Dresden Gate, probably dates back to the 14th century.
