Homelani Cemetery is about 3.5 miles west of Kaunakakai off of Highway 460 and is where the Maunahui-Makakupaia 4X4 trailhead is located. Take the first right after passing the Molokai Seventh-day Adventist Church, just before a bridge; there is a small sign for the cemetery. The Maunahui-Makakupa'ia Trail begins just past the cemetery entrance and there are a few parking spots for you to leave your car at. Please be respectful of non-hikers or bikers there to pay their respects to loved ones when utilizing this trailhead. The first five miles of the ride are on a silty (be careful when descending this portion, the silt rides like sand) 4WD road with limited shade - try not to ride this in the full afternoon sun! After you enter the the forest preserve after these initial miles the ride turns truly beautiful as you ride through lush forests and to the Waikolu Overlook area.

The Waikolu Overlook is an incredible beautiful overlook that provides amazing views out into the Waikolu Valley and to the ocean. This overlook stands at 3,600ft and there is a picnic pavilion to relax at. On cooler, misty days it can be quite cold here so in addition to water and snacks, and be sure to bring layers. This spot is a popular hiking destination via the Pepe’opae Bog Trail, but can also be biked to via the Maunahui-Makakupa'ia Trail, a long 4WD trail.

This store is a great place to stop during a ride, with a wide selection of local foods, snacks and drinks. Here, you can grab a deli sandwich made to order to take with you or sit outside on the patio overlooking Makawao and enjoy several options, from a fantastic Acai bowl with granola and berries, fresh ahi poke, delicious ice cream, gelato, Kombucha, and Kona coffee.

The Kahakapo Loop Trail is a smooth singletrack trail that winds through a dense forest with ferns and moss cover rocks lining the trail. For the best downhill experience ride the trail in a clockwise direction.
