This lock is part of the famous Delta Works. However, it was not built to protect the land from the water, but to flush various small bodies of water and lakes in the area with clean water.

The salt marshes and mudflats at Rilland are part of the Drowned Land of Zuid-Beveland (part of Oosterschelde National Park), a dynamic salt marsh landscape characterised by daily flooded, nutrient-rich mudflats and higher salt marshes covered with salt grass, which are submerged at high tide, and offer a unique habitat for birds and salt-tolerant plants such as glasswort and sea lavender, with walking opportunities that show the variation of this area.

Very nice location, well attended, lots of racers. The food and drinks were great.

A tough section, where you have to find your line well to avoid too much bouncing. The real Flandrien rides it as a climb of course (pay close attention if you were to descend it). Here and there the stones are quite far apart, filled with sand. A beautiful climb, almost through a sunken road. Because of those trees on the side, there is a bit more bouncing with the tree roots. Beautiful view from the Bathse Spuisluis. The Bathse sluice canal and the Bathse sluice were built as part of the Delta Works to drain the fresh water from the entire area between the Volkerak Dam and the Kreekrak Locks. The canal was eight kilometers long, and a sluice was built at its end. The sluice was placed in the Western Scheldt dike. The Bathse sluice consists of 6 concrete culverts, through which the fresh water can flow into the Western Scheldt. This happens without the aid of pumps. source: geocaching.com
