This lock is part of the famous Delta Works. However, it was not built to protect the land from the water, but to flush various small bodies of water and lakes in the area with clean water.

Beautiful view from the Bathse Spuisluis.
The Bathse sluice canal and the Bathse sluice were built as part of the Delta Works to drain the fresh water from the entire area between the Volkerak Dam and the Kreekrak Locks. The canal was eight kilometers long, and a sluice was built at its end.
The sluice was placed in the Western Scheldt dike.
The Bathse sluice consists of 6 concrete culverts, through which the fresh water can flow into the Western Scheldt. This happens without the aid of pumps.
