The former Dyksterhusen drilling platform is located in the dike foreland on the Dollart River in the municipality of Jemgum, East Frisia. It was built in 1964 to conduct exploratory drilling for natural gas. Although a deposit was indeed discovered, exploitation proved to be unprofitable, so the project was discontinued. Today, the drilling platform has a completely different function: It is a popular tourist destination and offers visitors a unique view of the Dollart River. The platform features benches, a telescope, and information panels about the region's flora and fauna. Access is via a narrow gravel path, which can be flooded at high tide and is therefore not always passable. In addition to walkers and cyclists, mudflat guides also use the site to introduce visitors to the natural and cultural landscape of the Dollart River. Thus, the former Dyksterhusen drilling platform is less a testament to industrial use than a place of tranquility, information, and encounters with the East Frisian landscape.
