Originally intended to house a linen market, Place Sébastopol remained a large empty space in 1903, where parking problems were nonexistent. In 1880, the Lille municipality planned to build a linen market on this square. The painter Bouldoduc, through the realism of his painting, suggests that this linen market actually existed. However, only the foundations were laid. On the night of April 5-6, 1903, a fire ravaged the Grand Théâtre de Lille. The next day, the municipality decided to quickly rebuild a temporary theater. It opted for the design by architect Léonce Hainiez, while the Debosque company from Armentières was responsible for the construction. Construction began on August 19 and took 103 days. Finally, on November 30, 1903, Gustave Delory, mayor of Lille, inaugurated the theater. At its inauguration in 1903, spectators discovered a 2,000-seat auditorium (which did not yet bear the name Sébastopol). They admired a ceiling painted with fashionable motifs of the time, lit by four chandeliers (these motifs have since disappeared). In addition, the orchestra pit, almost at the same level as the auditorium, offered excellent visibility for the spectators. To improve comfort, the Sébastopol reduced its seating to 1,350 in 1998. Furthermore, the conviviality between the artist and the audience was optimized during variety shows thanks to the proscenium. Finally, on December 15, 1998, the Sébastopol Theater reopened its doors after two years of renovations to ensure safety compliance. Its excellent visibility and perfect acoustics continually contribute to its success.

The Théâtre Sébastopol is an Art Nouveau building. It was built on a large square where a cloth hall was supposed to be built. When the Grand Théâtre burned down in 1903, it was decided to build a temporary theatre building on this square. The construction work took just over 3 months. The building was opened on 30 November 1903 and could seat 2000 spectators. At the end of the last century, this 'temporary theatre building' was thoroughly restored. Approximately 1350 spectators can attend theatre performances, operettas and other performances. Notice the heavy load that the two powerhouses on either side of the entrance have to carry. This square was built during the Third Republic (after Napoleon III). The plan was made so prestigious that this square had to show that one is in a capital city. Although today much of that prestige has been lost. That is the impression you get. The metro station under this square is one of the most beautiful in Lille. On the right you see the Préfecture (commissariat). This impressive palace was built in the same period, namely in 1869. On the left is the Palace of Fine Arts. It is one of the richest museums in the region and the second most important in France after the Louvre. So you see mainly paintings by the Flemish Primitives, the Flemish School 17th century, the Dutch School 17th century, the French School from the 17th to the 19th century, the Italian and Spanish School, the Impressionists and Contemporary painting. On the ground floor you will find sculptures and other art objects, with temporary exhibitions.

Construction of the prefecture began in 1865 and was completed in 1905. The building was designed by architect Charles Marteau. It is built in a neoclassical style with elements of the French Renaissance. The prefecture is located on the north side of Place de la République, opposite the Palais des Beaux-Arts. The prefecture serves as the administrative center for the region and the department, where various government departments and civil servants work. The building is a historical monument and has been listed as a protected site since 1975.
