Casemates are actually a kind of bunker before the term existed: in various places in the fortifications of Menen, such spaces can be found where soldiers could take cover and fire from. The fortifications of Menen largely date from the period of French occupation in the 17th century. They were built according to Vauban's well-known concept (see also Berguès, Lille, Arras in Northern France, and Ypres, Tournai, Veurne, and Menen in Flanders). These fortresses were completely dismantled in 1744 on the orders of Louis XV. The so-called "Blekerijvesting" is more recent and Dutch. The first stone was laid on May 1, 1817. Vauban's foundations were used, but with a number of adjustments. In the 1990s, a number of fortress walls and casemates were restored. This one was one of them. A walking path was created between the casemates from the Blekerijvesting car park to the Sluizenkaai. Source: menen.be

In 1920, a new branch of the Leie was excavated in Menen and fitted with locks. In 1990, engineers diverted the course of the Leie again, creating an island between the old and new riverbeds. It lies on French territory and is now a pleasant park. You can reach it via the bridge over the locks. (See the highlight "Old Leie Branch") The locks' age is evident in their construction materials: not concrete, but individual stones. The 1920 work was intended to make the Leie navigable for boats up to 300 tons – by comparison, the river is now suitable for vessels up to 1,350 tons. The complex has been a protected monument since 2005. Source: toerisme-leiestreek.be

Besides connecting two banks and two countries, the bridge also appears to form a dividing line between two worlds: on the western side, the industrial character of the 180-meter-long quay of the container terminal and the recycling company Galloo France; on the eastern side, primarily green and residential areas.

This neo-Gothic cruciform church was founded by the Bruges priest Alphonse-Marie Coulon to serve the rapidly growing population of the Mont d'Halluin neighborhood. The sisters of the Filles de la Sagesse congregation settled there in 1886, and Alphonse-Marie Coulon celebrated mass in a chapel, but the anticlerical authorities expelled him. He was allowed to return in 1889 after proving his French descent. After various legal difficulties, construction of a church began in 1895 and was consecrated in 1897. The square in front of the church now bears the name of Alphonse-Marie Coulon. Since 1990, there has no longer been a dedicated pastor, but the church falls under a larger parish. Source: Wikipedia
