You can cycle almost endlessly along the Canal Du Midi, partly on gravel roads and dirt, which is not recommended after rain, and often on asphalt.

This part of the route is very difficult to ride on the bike, but it is very picturesque and rewarding to drive. I would not drive if it rained or rained recently - then the track is very slippery

No excursion that you must have seen, but if you are near you could make a quick stop there to admire the old architecture.

A detour to La Tamarissiere-Grau d'Agde is worthwhile

It is a wonderful tour that always follows the Canal du Midi, which has been expanded in some places. However, it is very difficult to navigate in some places when it is wet!

There are very beautiful cycle paths along the Canals du Midi that are also suitable for families.

The Libron works are an ingenious system of locks dating from 1855 and which allow the Canal du Midi to cross the Libron without suffering the problems linked to the periodic flooding of the river.

The Canal du Midi is a navigable canal that connects the city of Toulouse to the city of Sète, on the Mediterranean. It was built between 1666 and 1681 by the engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet to facilitate the transport of goods between the two cities. The canal passes through many beautiful landscapes including vineyards, sunflower fields and forests. It is lined with plane trees and towpaths that offer visitors the opportunity to walk, cycle or sail on the water. The Canal du Midi is also known for its locks, bridges and tunnels. It has about 60 locks, each allowing to cross a level difference between two sections of the canal. Bridges are also a notable feature of the canal, with the famous Pont-Canal de Cesse, which crosses the River Cesse, and the Pont-Canal d'Orb, which crosses the River Orb. The canal has become a popular tourist destination, with many cruise ships offering trips along its banks. The towns and villages along the canal also offer many tourist attractions, including museums, churches and local markets. The Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Toulouse region and the south of France.

Unique sluice with mobile pods to regulate a regulation of the water passing through the Libron. An incredibly ingenious construction on the Canal Du Midi.

It's impressive what kind of history such an old lock has. The Canal du Midi opened in 1681, a year after the death of its designer and implementer, Pierre-Paul Riquet. Between its opening and the creation of the Ouvrages du Libron, the Libron regularly overflowed, filling the canal with silt and debris. During periods of flooding, a special barge with flush walls was placed in the canal like a raft with high walls at either end, creating a large walled area that allowed the Libron to flow across the canal without depositing its silt and garbage. [2] Canal traffic could not pass while the barge was in place and had to wait until the tide receded and the barge was removed. In 1855, the Ouvrages du Libron (Works of Libron) were built to allow better coexistence between the two streams. The engineer Urbain Maguès designed a structure that allowed the Libron to be directed so that a canal boat could pass safely, limiting the mud and debris deposited into the canal by the flooded river. [3] Operation Edit The Libron can be either a dry bed or a quiet stream or a stream caused by melting snow and heavy rains. During light volume, the Libron flows through a culvert below the intersection. [4] During times of heavy runoff, the Libron carries significant amounts of silt and vegetation. The surface levels of the two streams are very similar under normal circumstances. This crossing on such narrow plains would not admit of an aqueduct or other usual means of crossing one stream over another. The Libron riverbed was altered so that the stream split into two channels as it approached the Canal du Midi. The paths crossed the canal through the Ouvrages du Libron, consisting of six "gates" on each side of a "protected area" 30.5 meters long. [1] At high water, the Libron crosses the Canal du Midi in two bodies. Each body passes through the "works" through six gates that open into six lock bodies. Each lock consists of three wall sections. The river enters the work when the sliding gate is up and is bounded by the stone walls of the "works", then by walls slid over the canal body, and finally by the stone walls on the exit side. The bed of the Libron was placed near the normal level of the surface of the Canal du Midi at the crossing. The soles of the locks across the canal lie almost on the water surface of the canal. The work made it possible to stop the river path closest to an approaching boat for a period of time to allow a canal boat to traverse that area and rest for a time in the "protected area" between the two paths. The river path behind the boat would now flow again and the path in front of the boat is stopped. The boat can now cross this second path unhindered. [1] The Libron River is located in the French department of Hérault in the Languedoc-Roussillon region and flows into the Mediterranean. One of the many locks along the route. This is particularly nice because there is also a pretty place with restaurants right on the canal.

Our bike tour went from Marseillan Plage along cycle paths and secondary roads, partly past the Canal du Midi. 28KM to Serignan. A very nice tour but mostly unshaded! Serignan is a very old small town on the Orb with many artistic impressions. Back we chose a slightly different way on side roads. Driving on the canal is quite difficult because the dirt road is very rugged and uncomfortable to drive on. Otherwise a nice experience!
