The freshwater lake in front of you is the result of several storm surges that have plagued the island in the past. Due to the Petri flood in 1651, the island was divided into two parts. The breakthrough wasn't fully closed until 1928. But the dike created afterwards did not withstand the flood in 1932 and the water that reached the island behind it created the Hammersee. Today the lake no longer has any salinity. There is a hiking trail all around - also through the Juister wood with its gnarled trees.

We rounded the Hammersee on both sides, but also found the south side a bit nicer and easier to walk. Although there is no direct view of the lake, the grove offers plenty of variety and tranquility.
