After a steep climb up the stairs amidst the rocky landscape, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful view and fresh forest air. The Bastei is hidden in a rocky landscape close to Thum's market square, in the forest that stretches between Thum and Herold. You enter through a wooden portal, and a well-marked, romantic forest path leads you further. Not far from the Bastei is another higher vantage point in the forest, the Georgfelsen, as well as the Wettinplatz, a former manor cemetery. In the replica of the 1727 distance column on the market square, only the base is original granite, as it was temporarily used as a war memorial. The sandstone addition and re-erection took place in 1978.

A large music box in front of the town hall, on which fairy tale characters such as Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots, and Little Red Riding Hood spin throughout the Christmas season. The design for the music box was created by Adolph Selinke. Participants in its construction were: Adolph Selinke, Thum Woodcarving and Lacemaking Association, and mechanics: Helmut Landrock and Dietmar Mauersberger. Since 2021, the festively decorated music box in front of the town hall has been spinning at Easter time. Discover the lovingly painted wooden figures as they spin around the music box while various songs play. In the center, you'll also find a birch tree decorated with Easter eggs.
