Porta Venezia is one of Milan's historic main gates, opening into the Spanish bastions. It was later redesigned in the Neoclassical era for two new functions: as a customs barrier and as a triumphal entrance to the city. Its original name was Porta Orientale. In Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed, Renzo Tramaglino entered through this very gate to search for Lucia Mondella.

Villa Mirabello, a wonderful example of 17th-century architecture and residence, was built in the mid-17th century by the Durini family, who had purchased the fiefdom of Monza in 1648. The Durinis built a beautiful villa, with large halls for parties and receptions, named "Mirabello." Its U-shaped structure, open to the river landscape and featuring a courtyard, is of great structural significance, as it marks the transition from the typology of the walled country palace, typical of the 15th and 16th centuries, to the new concept of the palace-villa opening onto a scenic garden or park.

The Royal Expiatory Chapel was commissioned by Vittorio Emanuele III, son and successor of Umberto I, to commemorate the place where his father was killed by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci on July 29, 1900. The monument consists of a crypt and a chapel, surmounted by a stele.

Porta Venezia, formerly called Porta Orientale (it was renamed in the 18th century, during Austrian rule), was one of the eight toll gates, but above all one of the triumphal entrances to Milan. Its toll gates, which separate Corso Venezia from Corso Buenos Aires, were built in 1828 by Rodolfo Vantini, an architect who won a competition to replace the two previous toll gates, deemed too humble and left unfinished. Vantini constructed two parallelepiped-shaped buildings, open on three sides with porticoes with Doric columns; he adorned them with sculptures by artists. In the corners, he placed statues of Carrara marble. Looking closely, one notices that high up on all the facades are bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Milan's history.

The climb with its hairpin bends is nice. It's a miniature, cyclable mountain pass.
