The low mountain landscape surrounding Kostenz Monastery and the nearby climatic health resort of Sankt Englmar, with its local mountains of Pröller, Hirschenstein, Schopf, and Grandsberg, offers excellent opportunities for hikes, walks, and mountain bike tours through meadows and forests of all levels of difficulty. However, the Kostenz Monastery Conference and Recreation Center was closed on July 31, 2022, as the facility had not been able to cover its operating costs for years.

The so-called "Swedish Crosses" are memorial crosses commemorating those killed as victims of the often marauding (plundering) troops that roamed the country during those warlike times (the first half of the 17th century). However, in the strictest sense of the word, they are not "atonement crosses," because such crosses were to be erected by the perpetrators themselves as part of their atonement (penance) for their crimes, whereas memorial crosses were erected by people close to the victim (often family members, possibly friends, or neighbors).
