The foundation stone is located in the base area, to the right of the side entrance to the church. The inscription on the stone reads: "Lapis primarius Anno Domini MDCCCXCIII the 17 Octobris" Translation: "Foundation stone in the year of our Lord 1893 on October 17th" Explanation: Lapis primarius = "first stone" or "foundation stone" Anno Domini = "in the year of our Lord" MDCCCXCIII = 1893 (Roman numeral) the 17 Octobris = "on October 17th"

This church in Reifferscheid (Ahrweiler district) was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (from the Hebrew language) means "Who is like God?" He is often depicted—in paintings or as a statue—with a flaming sword, occasionally with a lance. Michael is—along with Raphael and Gabriel, and occasionally Uriel—one of the three or four archangels who (according to human belief) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.

According to a visitation report from the Schuld parish, the St. Apollinaris Chapel in Winnerath was built in 1666. In 1897, the chapel tower was so dilapidated that it had to be renovated and re-roofed the following year. In 1926, the chapel was enlarged with an extension. In 1960, the chapel was renovated again. In front of the chapel stands a 300-year-old wych elm, which even adorns the coat of arms of the local community of Winnerath. The Hürstnück nature reserve impresses with its rare heath and dry grassland landscapes, which provide a special habitat for flora and fauna. From here, the view inevitably wanders to the striking highlights of the Eifel: the Hohe Acht, the Nürburg castle ruins and the Nürburgring are clearly visible on the horizon and give the picturesque High Eifel landscape its unmistakable character.

Three building periods can now be identified in the church: the Gothic tower shaft, the neo-Gothic building according to Fisenne and the extensions of our time, which are subordinate to a large formal concept and thus complement each other excellently. Due to the use of quarry stones in the side aisles, which were also present in the old building, the extensions are hardly noticeable at first glance. A breathtaking view leads the viewer's gaze to the most striking mountain ranges of the Hocheifel landscape (source: https://www.eifel.info/a-panoramablick-auf-der-huerstnueck). When the weather is nice, you can even see as far as the Siebengebirge!
