3月 2, 2025, Forest Trail in the Eifel
It goes up and down quite a bit, but it's better than the tarmac road. unless it's rained a lot, then it might be more difficult. but you can also walk along the tarmac road and get back to the path.

5月 12, 2024, Schutzalf Memorial Bell Tower
In the beautiful Alfbach valley, about 1.5 km east of Mückeln, the vanished village of Schutzalf was located until the end of the 19th century. The former hamlet, consisting of three or four houses and a chapel with a brother's apartment, was located between the Sprinker Hof and the Sprinker Mühle, both of which were owned by the Augustinian monastery of Springiersbach, which was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. Schutzalf served as a place of pilgrimage at the time, and a fragment of the cross was kept in its chapel. The year 1545 is said to have been inscribed above the entrance to the chapel. According to oral tradition, the remains of the altar stones from the Schutzalf chapel can still be found on a meadow by the Alfbach. Schutzalf also included the former monastery pond, located 600 m west of it, which the local community of Mückeln transformed into a unique wetland biotope. For many years, to be precise since Schutzalf was abandoned after the death of the last resident in 1882, the stones in the meadow were the only thing that reminded people of the vanished place.

The monastery pond probably dates from the 16th century. It was destroyed by the French in 1812 or 1813. In 1985 it was renatured and redesigned as a wetland biotope.

1月 6, 2023, Schutzalf Memorial Bell Tower
Memorial to the former hamlet of Schutzalf, which consisted of four houses and a small pilgrimage chapel. The place died out, the chapel fell into disrepair and only this monument keeps the memory of the hamlet alive (mueckeln.de/files/Documentation-Schutzalf-Akte.pdf).

"In 893 Niederscheidweiler was mentioned for the first time in Germany's most famous register of goods - the Prüm Urbar - the register of goods of the Imperial Abbey of Prüm. But people lived here much earlier, as various finds from Roman times show. For example the pine cone (AD 200-300) - a grave crown and symbol of eternal life - and parts of a Roman villa in the church area. Until the end of the feudal period, Niederscheidweiler belonged to the Electorate of Trier. During the visitation in 1569, the chapel and later church already lists Saint Hubert as the church and local patron. The village church tells part of the village history. The tower, which still characterizes the village today, dates from the late 12th or 13th century. The current nave was built in 1806 after the old church burned down in 1799 along with a large part of the village. From 1964 to 1966 the church was expanded to its present form. Special sights in the parish church are: the large statue of the Mother of God, probably from the Wittlich Castle Chapel, 18th century, the cemetery cross in the chapel, also 18th century, the "Eternal Light" from the time the nave was built, and the modern works from that time of the church extension by the Wittlich sculptor Hanns Scherl." https://niederscheidweiler.de/unser-dorf/#geschichte

3月 22, 2022, Rest Area by the Alfbach
"...The Alf, or Alfbach, is an approximately 52 km long tributary of the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate. It overcomes an elevation difference of 454 m to the Moselle, which corresponds to an average bed gradient of 8.6 ‰. The Alfbach rises in the Eifel near Hörscheid at an elevation of 549 m above sea level and flows southward, passing Darscheid, Gillenfeld, and Strohn to Bausendorf. From here, the Alf flows east past Kinderbeuern and Bengel, turning north after passing Bengel. Near Alf, the Alfbach, coming from the districts of Höllenthal and Alf-Fabrik, finally flows into the Moselle. ..." https://www.kuladig.de/Objektansicht/KLD-245822

"The two world wars of 1914/18 and 1939/45 tore large gaps in the village community. Many men, some of whom were very young, died or are missing to this day. March 18, 1945 went down in village history as a particularly horrific, painful day. On that day, at the behest of the Americans, men from the village had to bury horse carcasses that lay above the Oberscheidweiler mill. On the way home they encountered an American column of vehicles loaded with heavy bridge components in the "Kalwawiss", the valley between the "Berghof" and the village. The men stepped aside and walked straight onto the deadly mines laid by the German soldiers stationed in the village without leaving a map. Not only those directly involved, but also the people from the village who rushed to help lost their lives or were injured so badly that they are still suffering to this day. Four men were killed instantly; one died on the way to the hospital and another a few days later. A woman and a man died several years later as a result of the accident! It is reported that the Americans spontaneously and generously provided first aid. 50 years later, the local community erected a memorial stone at the site of the accident with the following inscription: << To honor the dead, to remind the living >> ." http://www.oberscheidweiler.de/de/unser-dorf/geschichte/mahnmal/

<< The history of Oberscheidweiler >> "Our village has been called Oberscheidweiler since 1693. In a first documented mention, on August 1st, 1144, King Conrad II of Cochem confirmed in a letter of protection to Abbot Richard von "Sprengkirsbach" that goods were being donated to his monastery by the deceased Count Palatine Wilhelm, including in "Scheida". This documented fact was brilliantly confirmed in 1994 in an impressive 850-year celebration in a festival year under the heading "The village, our future" and properly celebrated with several thousand guests. However, there is no doubt that the place is much older, as the main Trier-Koblenz route passed through here. On April 28, 1193, Emperor Heinrich VI. to Boppard the abbot Absalomon of "Sprenkirsbach" possessions, among other things fields, meadows and serfs in "Scheitwilre" ("Scheitewilre"). In another Springiersbach "Weistum" (legal ordinance) from 1506, ownership in "Scheidweiler" ("Scheidtweyler") is mentioned. In this context, a "Springiersbach mill" is mentioned for the first time from the same year, where the residents of "Scheidweiler" had to have their grain ground. The village was under the electoral sovereignty of Trier, the Office of Daun, and belonged judicially to the High Court of Strohn. In 1569 our village was called "Uderscheitwiler". Today's name Oberscheidweiler is mentioned for the first time in tax lists of the years 1654/55! Likewise a description of the "Springiersbacher Hof" in Oberscheidweiler from the year 1693. As is well known, when Napoleon and his troops reached the region in 1804/05, the entire church property was secularized. Of course, the land in the "Oberscheidweiler district" was also sold to other owners. The "Springiersbacher Hof", the former inn Koenen, also changed hands with the land belonging to it." http://www.oberscheidweiler.de/de/unser-dorf/geschichte/

Just one of many beautiful and well-kept places to rest on the "2-Bäch-Path" 👌😃 !!! Here at the "Alte Eiche" rest area in the Alfbach valley, next to the venerable oak, there is an old, weathered cross made of stone. Too bad, the inscription on it is no longer decipherable. 🤔 https://www.ich-geh-wandern.de/vulkaneifel-pfad-2-b%C3%A4che-pfad "The 2-Bäche-Path is a partner path of the Eifelsteig and belongs to the group of Vulkaneifel-Paths. This feeder path to the Eifelsteig is characterized above all by its alpine landscape between Niederscheidweiler and Hasborn, as well as a constant change from up and down the valley . The plateaus are generally used for agriculture, while the steep slopes are characterized by wild forests. The 2-Bäch-Path is a 14 km long circular hike, the path of which is permanently accompanied by the brooks Alf and Sammet." Directions / Parking: 50°03'15.5"N 6°54'47.4"E
