St. Maternus is considered the patron saint against fever, contagious diseases, and the prosperity of wine. This latter fact explains why he is especially venerated in wine-growing regions. The Maternus Portal of Cologne Cathedral tells the legend of the saint: Maternus was sent to Gaul by Peter along with Eucharius of Trier, Valerius of Trier, and Clement of Metz. Upon arriving in Avolsheim in Alsace, Maternus is said to have collapsed from exhaustion, whereupon his companions became discouraged and returned to Rome. Peter, however, gave them his shepherd's crook, with which they traveled back to Alsace. With the help of this crook, they revived Maternus, who had already been in his grave for six weeks.
