The Schrumpfbachtal valley is a very beautiful forest. Today, however, there were uprooted or broken trees on this section. We were able to climb under the first one, but that wasn't possible with the other three! Here we went up the slope on the left in the forest, which is, of course, quite slippery. However, there was no obvious detour for us.

Those exploring the dream trail "Pyrmonter Felsensteig" will reach the highest point of the route on the Sammetzkopf. There, an illuminated summit cross stands prominently, even in the dark. From the Sammetzkopf, an impressive view opens up: It stretches as far as Münstermaifeld with its magnificent collegiate church and further to the volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel. The wide panoramic view over the plateau forms a fascinating yet harmonious contrast to the narrow paths in the Elz Valley.

"Elaborately built burial mounds (so-called tumuli) such as those in Nickenich and Ochtendung impressively show how Celtic and Roman culture can merge. Wealthy Celts were buried here in the 1st century AD according to Roman custom. The valuable tuff stone from the tuff mines in the valley of the Krufter Bach was used as building material. In Nickenich we even know the names of the deceased: Contuinda with her son Silvanus. Both are also depicted on the niche tomb that was discovered right next to the tumulus. During the "opening hours" (in summer on the first Sunday of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) you can get an informative talk and go down into the shafts to follow the tunnel for a good 20 meters. It is not known where the water comes from or where it ultimately comes out. There are speculations, but all experiments with colored water have been unsuccessful.
