The Oefter Bach is a 4.8 km long, orographically left tributary of the Ruhr River in North Rhine-Westphalia, flowing along the bottom of a deeply incised valley. The actual floodplain is only between forty and one hundred meters wide. Moisture-loving stands of alder and poplar extend across the valley floor. The rather steep valley slopes are predominantly covered with beech, pedunculate oak, and other tree species, some of which are 120 to 150 years old. Numerous small side valleys with narrow streams feed the Oefter Bach.

Around 1240, the Neue Isenburg, named after the Isenburg in Hattingen, was built above the Ruhr by Count Dietrich von Altena-Isenberg. Only 48 years later it was destroyed again. Its ruins were only excavated again at the beginning of the last century. The Neue Isenburg ruins are a side view of the BaldeneySteig.

The Heisinger Bogen bird sanctuary was established in the 1930s. Many species of birds, some of them rare, live in the nature reserve on the north bank of Lake Baldeney, including water rails, kingfishers, little grebes, cormorants and gray herons.
