12月 30, 2025, Commanderie van Sint-Pieters-Voeren
The Commanderie is a textbook example of the Maasland Renaissance style, recognizable by: brick construction combined with Namur stone; straight, symmetrical volumes; decorative tiers of brick; a closed, almost monastic courtyard.

9月 9, 2025, Commanderie van Sint-Pieters-Voeren
Commanderie Castle is one of the most historically significant buildings in the region. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages: as early as the 13th century, a settlement of the Teutonic Knights existed here, from which the name "Commanderie" is derived. The castle was not only a stately residence but also an administrative and economic center for the surrounding lands. The complex is surrounded by a moat and has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. A characteristic feature is the combination of medieval foundations with later Renaissance and Baroque elements. Particularly striking are the picturesque courtyard, the historic farm buildings, and the castle grounds surrounded by avenues and meadows. After the end of the Order's rule, the property passed into private hands and was used for agricultural purposes for a time. Today, Commanderie Castle is privately owned but parts of it are used for cultural and tourist activities. The castle represents the eventful history of the border region between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany and reflects the influence of religious orders of knights on the cultural landscape of this region.

4月 2, 2025, Bokrijk Castle
The history of Bokrijk goes back to the thirteenth century when the Count of Loon sold the forest ‘Buscurake’ to the sisters of the abbey of Herkenrode who had a model farm built there. The castle was only built in 1891 by Edgard Maris, a rentier from Hasselt. He had bought the entire Bokrijk estate from the Coghen family in 1889. Maris had a castle built in the Maasland neo-Renaissance style on the site where the old manor farm stood. However, Maris got into financial difficulties and three years later the estate came into the hands of Count Ferdinand de Meeûs, who expanded the castle with a right wing and chapel and laid out the park with roads and avenues. The Count died in 1916 and his family sold the estate to Jewish brokers from Germany. After the liberation, in 1918, the estate was seized. It was not until 1928 that the Boerenbond became the owner and sold the domain to the provincial government of Limburg in 1938. In the fifties, the province decided to set up an open-air museum of rural and urban living and living culture through the centuries, which opened in 1958. In 2008, the castle was renovated again and made suitable for conference rooms, equipped with modern communication means and equipment. (Along castles and fortresses)

3月 31, 2025, Landcommanderij Alden Biesen
The development of the Teutonic Order in the late 12th and early 13th centuries led to a territorial expansion that extended throughout the German Empire. For practical reasons, it was decided to divide the Order into independent land commanderies or barracks, under the supervision of a land commander, but subject to the authority of the land commander of the German Empire. In 1220, Count Arnold III of Loon and Mechtildis of Are, Abbess of Munsterbilzen, donated a small church with outbuildings and arable land to the Order. This church dated from 1209 and had become a Marian pilgrimage site. The seat of the bar, Alden Biesen, was established here. In 1227 or 1228, the Order, in the northwest of the Empire, fell outside the direct control of the German Master, and Alden Biesen became the core of the new "land commandery of the Netherlands." The Knights established a commandery in Alden Biesen, from which they founded other commanderies in the Netherlands: Bekkevoort (1229-30); Bernissem near Sint-Truiden (1237); Sint-Andreas in Liège (1254); Siersdorf (1270), Sint-Pieters-Voeren (1242), Gemert (1270), Holt (1281), and Ordingen near Sint-Truiden (1622). Utrecht, which also belonged to the original Grand Commandery of the Netherlands, became an independent Grand Commandery at the beginning of the 14th century. In 1362, Nieuwen Biesen was founded in Maastricht, initially merely a refuge house, but which grew into an important administrative center for the Order in the Netherlands. Construction of the current commandery began under Grand Commander Wijnandt van Brijel (1536-1554). The buildings, constructed since their foundation in 1220, were gradually demolished and replaced by new ones. Construction of the current moated castle began in 1543. The imposing castle of Betho was originally a moated castle. The residential domain is symmetrically laid out and consists of the castle, a square farm and a park with a pond. The current buildings mainly date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The marlstone corner tower is a remnant of the medieval castle. The castle is named after its first resident Arnold van Betu, popularly known as 'Betho'.

7月 6, 2024, Bokrijk Castle
Bokrijk Castle is relatively 'young' but there used to be a mansion with a farm on the site where the castle is now located. Let's go back in time: the Bokrijk domain came into the possession of the Cistercian abbey of Herkenrode via the Counts of Loon (the domain is also located on the Loonse Route of the Grote Routepaden) under the name of forest "Buscurake". They built ponds there and developed it as agricultural land. Certainly in the sixteenth century there was already an older farm near the castle. After a discussion between Herkenrode and Hasselt, the domain came into the possession of Genk in the sixteenth century and the older farm was replaced by a mansion with a farm in 1744-1745. The entire estate of Herkenrode Abbey - including Bokrijk - was sold in 1797 and the farm with lands evolved into a castle in neo-renaissance style with a farmyard, park and also lands. One of the later owners, the Edgard Maris-Vanhees family, had the castle and accompanying park laid out as it is now in 1890 and in 1898 the mansion was converted into a castle. For the construction of the country house in neo-renaissance style, remains of the square farm to the east of it, dating from the first half of the 18th century, were used. The former farm buildings are arranged around a partly cobbled, square courtyard with some beautiful trees, and are currently in use as a restaurant, offices and storage areas. The castle already evolved into a restaurant at the end of the 1950s when the Bokrijk nature reserve evolved into a recreation area. 6月 29, 2024, Commanderij van Sint-Pieters-Voeren
Daniel de Fouron donated the castle and the surrounding land to the Commander of Alden Biesen Castle when he joined the Teutonic Order on 25 June 1242. From that point on, Sint-Pieters-Voeren was a direct fief of the Empire. The Grand Master exercised jurisdiction. He appointed mayors, aldermen, judicial officers, bailiffs and issued police regulations and municipal law. The castle belonged to the Order of Knights until the French Revolution. At the beginning of the 17th century, the current building was built in the style of the Mosan Renaissance (Wikipedia).
