Homeleswijer is one of the characteristic ponds (wijers/ponds) you'll encounter during walks through the De Maten nature reserve in the Belgian province of Limburg. It lies within the watery landscape of the reserve, which is part of the larger De Wijers pond area, a network of natural and man-made ponds that originated from centuries-old fish farming traditions in the region. In De Maten, the Stiemerbeek stream and its tributaries formed the basis for pond complexes containing water features like the Homeleswijer. Dams and overflows made fish farming possible, creating a unique marsh and pond landscape full of reed beds, open water, and wet grasslands. Walking trails through De Maten—ranging from short loops to longer hikes—run along and around these ponds. They are true natural treasures: herons, waterfowl, and typical marsh plants can be found here, and information boards often line the path explaining the ecology and water management. Many walks along the Homeleswijer are signposted and start, for example, at the Slagmolen in Genk or at other access points in De Maten.

The boardwalk in the Ven onder de Berg Nature Reserve offers hikers a unique way to explore the marshy and wet landscape of the Voer region. The path is elevated above the damp ground and reeds, allowing visitors to walk through the reserve without getting their feet wet or disturbing the natural environment. The nature reserve itself is rich in biodiversity: reed beds, damp grasslands, and small ponds provide a home for amphibians, waterfowl, and unique plants such as bog myrtle and marsh marigold. The boardwalk allows hikers to observe and photograph this unique flora and fauna up close without damaging the fragile ecosystem.

Keienstrand lies on the shore of a clear lake in the Hoge Kempen National Park. This spot has a primal quality: large, rounded stones lie scattered along the water's edge, the wind gently blowing across the surface. It's a place that invites peace and reflection… where you can sit for a moment, listening to the lapping of the water and observing the play of light and shadow on the stones. The stones are a reminder of the geological history of this landscape, shaped by gravel extraction and nature restoration. Now, Keienstrand is a haven for both people and animals: dragonflies buzz above the water, birds skim low over the shore, and the scent of pine fills the air.

In the Mechelse Heide, a high wooden bench offers visitors an elevated view of the gravel pit and the surrounding nature reserve. From this vantage point, you can peacefully observe the water feature, the surrounding heathlands, and the forest, while spotting birds and other animals in their natural habitat. The high bench is an ideal resting spot during walks and offers a beautiful panorama for nature lovers and photographers, making it a popular stop along the hiking trails.

Deep in the Hoge Kempen National Park, an old, abandoned railway line once served to transport coal and materials from the mining region. Today, the line has fallen silent and is slowly being taken over by nature. Rusty rails disappear beneath moss and weeds, while trees and shrubs embrace the bed. The place exudes a mysterious, almost melancholic atmosphere—a quiet reminder of the industrial past that once bustled here, now transformed into a hidden hiking trail where nature and history converge.
