Frankenstein Castle was the ancestral castle of the important Franconian noble family of the Lords of Frankenstein, which descended from a side branch of the Counts of Henneberg and can be traced back to the middle of the 14th century in western Thuringia and the Rhön.

The castle sits on a mountain spur about 100 meters above the town on the Werra and is a well-preserved ruin of a spur castle.

The Brandenburg Castle ruins tower impressively above the Werra Valley. We saw them several times from the Werra Castle Trail and eventually visited them. The view from up here is magnificent!
