The Osterburg ruins are a fantastic hiking highlight.

The town of Schleusingen was granted town charter in 1412. From 1245 to 1583, Schleusingen was the seat of the Counts of Henneberg. The castle was strategically located at the junction of the Erfurt-Würzburg trade route. The early modern Bertoldsburg Castle is managed by the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and houses the Natural History Museum. The last Henneberg count, Georg Ernst, founded the Gymnasium (grammar school) in 1577, making it one of the four oldest educational institutions in Germany.

On the path leading up to Heldburg Fortress in Thuringia, you'll eventually come across a linden tree split in two. A sign is attached to the hollow of this tree, and I'd like to tell you about it now: "Castle Linden of Heldburg Fortress – Large-leaved Summer Linden. Wanderer, pause! Read my story here: In 1791, I was planted by the then Ducal Court Secretary, Johann Daniel Bechmann (1768-1826), from Heldburg. That's why I was also called the Bechmann Linden. Around 1960, lightning destroyed my beautiful crown and split the trunk. Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914) and his wife, Baroness von Heldburg (1839-1923), often lingered in the shade of its spreading branches when they resided here at the fortress during the summer months." Eisfeld Castle, a Franconian manor house from the 9th century, is essentially a medieval castle complex. The Stone House (palace) was built around 1090 and the keep in the 12th century. The castle has undergone many changes over the centuries. Since 1316, with the privilege of walling the town, the castle has formed the north-eastern part of Eisfeld's new town. In 1360 the bower was built and in 1558 the "new building" was built, which opens onto the town through a vaulted gateway built in 1580 and today forms the gatehouse. The economic wing (kitchen wing), built in 1555, between the palace and bower, gave the castle complex a closed horseshoe shape. One of the landmarks of the town of Eisfeld is the castle, which is essentially a medieval castle complex. For anyone interested in history, a visit to the ancestral castle of the Henneberg-Schleusinger line is a must. This exhibition is quite manageable, but is due to be expanded and remodeled in the near future - according to the friendly employee at the counter.

At the confluence of the Erle and Nahe, in the middle of the small medieval town of Schleusingen, stands the mighty Bertholdsburg Castle. From the 13th century onwards it served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg and is the oldest residential castle in Thuringia. In the 15th and 16th centuries the fortified castle was converted into an early modern castle in the Renaissance style. Today the castle houses the Natural History Museum. The 40-metre-high main tower offers a picturesque view of the southern foothills of the Thuringian Forest.
