    The Altenstein Castle was built in 1736 as a residential castle on the foundations of the worn-out Altenstein Castle for the dukes of Meiningen. After numerous changes of ownership it served at the time of the GDR as Handwerkererholungsheim. It was included in the list of monuments in the 1970s and should be opened to visitors along with the garden. In 1982, the work resulted in a catastrophic fire in which the castle burned to the ground. Even before the turnaround began with improper renovations, which quickly came to a halt. After a long construction break, the castle has been renovated since 2010 and is to be restored to its original state. From the outside you can already visit the magnificent building and stroll through the extensive park.

            The castle with its park is really a feast for the eyes.
            At least it is still a construction site inside. But there are nice corners and niches all around where you can stay. A beautifully planted park invites you to stroll.

                    Altenstein Castle is located just a few kilometers from Thuringia's oldest health resort, Bad Liebenstein. Built in neo-renaissance style, it once served as a summer residence for the dukes of Saxe-Meiningen. The castle is surrounded by a picturesque landscape park with a Chinese house, ornate carpet beds and vantage points of the Werra valley. None other than Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau was involved in the design of the park. Since 2017, the palace has housed a memorial for Johannes Brahms, who visited there several times.

                                The court marshal's office, the building with the column passage, was the seat of the economic administrator at the time.
                                The rotunda housed horse stables and an orangery.
                                The two head buildings were the gentleman's houses.
                                They were used as guest and servant houses.
                                The buildings were built between 1803 and 1815.
                                The park and palace administration is now located in the northern Kavaliershaus.
                                During the GDR era from 1951, the complex was used as a forestry school, later in 1958 it was converted into an agricultural engineering school.
                                From 5.10. In 1992, TÜV Thüringen e. V. has a technical academy in the building and offers courses and retraining in the field of occupational safety and landscaping.
                                Since 2015, the information center of the development association has been located in the passage of the main gate with exhibition rooms for the restoration of the castle, the history of Altenstein, the ducal house and the region around the Altenstein, where information material can also be purchased.
                                There is a small museum with historical exhibits on the upper floor.

                                        You absolutely have to take your time for the castle park and the surrounding area. There is a lot to see in the extensive grounds and wonderful viewpoints. You will find a picnic area everywhere.

                                            What has been rebuilt since 2010 looks pretty good. It will be interesting to see how it will look inside and, above all, when it will be finished. Then I would definitely come back again.

                                                The Hofmarschallamt at the main entrance to the park Altenstein was the seat of the Wästschaftsverwalter. It includes two cavalier houses for Duke's guests, stables and an orangery.
