In several places in the Steinkart Forest, so-called funnel pit fields can be found as evidence of old iron ore mining. Funnel pits are round to oval, closed hollow shapes. Between them there are small ramparts and hills made of the excavated material. Iron ore concretions were extracted from the pits, which are enriched in the accumulating layers in the quartz residual gravel or at the top of the solid gravel. The mining took place from around 250 BC to 1200 AD. This is under special protection as an archaeological monument (monument no. D-2-7545-0021). Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU).
