The Baroque palace was built in several phases at the end of the 17th and 18th centuries (1694-1786) as a summer residence for the abbots of Langheim. During the first phase, the Langheim abbot Gallus Knauer had the eastern wing built between 1694 and 1698, based on plans attributed to Johann Leonard Dietzenhofer. The later sections of the west wing and western central wing were originally constructed as four-story outbuildings. The four floors reached a total height equal to the three living floors of the first building section. Billmuthausen was first mentioned in 1340 as Billmuthehusen. The village was essentially a manor. In 1840, Billmuthausen had 14 houses, a mill, and a church; by 1850, the village had 68 inhabitants. The mill had a milling and grinding mill, its own water and electricity supply, and a bakery. In September 2005, the memorial's support association erected a three-ton millstone to commemorate the Billmuthausen Mill. The memorial has also been expanded with three new information panels. This former millstone is the only reminder of the former Billmuthausen mill. Billmuthausen was once a village directly on the border and was razed. Billmuthausen is a deserted village in the Bad Colberg district of the town of Heldburg in the Hildburghausen district of Thuringia.
