The history of the place
Billmuthausen was first mentioned in 1340 as Billmuthehusen. The village was a manor, in 1840 there were 14 houses in Billmuthausen, a cutting and grinding mill and a church, around 1850 the village had 68 inhabitants. Billmuthausen belonged to the Saxon district of Heldburg.

In 1965 the authorities ordered the demolition of the village church, in 1977 they had the mill demolished and announced the complete evacuation of the village. The border fortifications were built right through the middle of the village. In 1978 the last family was deported and the village was razed to the ground. The evacuation of the cemetery was planned but was not carried out.

Billmuthausen, a piece of history of the former GDR. Anyone who has friends who can tell how their parents or grandparents were treated back then will be shocked. That is why this place is an important part of remembering the injustice experienced during the GDR era.
