The Bärenstein, the erosion remnant of a former lava flow, consists predominantly of basalt. The table mountain is 898 meters high. The summit trail leads to several worthwhile vantage points. From the summit cross, there is a beautiful view of the Cranzahl drinking water reservoir, which was commissioned in 1952.

In 1903, a mountain hut belonging to the Erzgebirge Association on the summit of Bärenstein formed the nucleus of today's guesthouse and hotel with an observation tower. Ten years later, the hut was expanded into a lodging house. After reunification, the mountain house, now run again as a family business, was reconstructed and reopened in 1992, and renovated again in 2021. The mountain hotel, located at an altitude of 898 meters, offers 22 rustic rooms and, as a special attraction, a 27-meter-high observation tower. On September 11, 1944, the tower was damaged during the air battle over the Ore Mountains ("Black Monday"). Bullet holes can still be seen in the spiral staircase.

The Bärenstein is 897.8 m high. It is located about two kilometers north of the town of the same name, Bärenstein, in the Erzgebirgskreis. The mountain range is part of the “Bierenstein” landscape protection area. To the north of the summit is the approximately 1 hectare large area natural monument "The Bärenstein was integrated into the measurement network in the course of the Royal Saxon triangulation and a second order triangulation column was erected on the summit in 1865. The column, which had fallen over for years, was moved around 25 meters to the south in 2005 The original location was rebuilt. Due to the dense forest cover on the hilltop, the view of the neighboring stations on the Pöhlberg, Scheibeberg and Fichtelberg is no longer possible.

The year was 1878 when the Marienberg branch of the Ore Mountains was founded. One of the founding members, namely Gustav Loose, set up a restaurant in the former hat house "Alte Drei Brüder". This retreat soon became very popular, not least because of the Princess Marien Tower, which had been completed three years previously. Generations of hikers and day trippers have been able to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view here. The Berghaus "Dreibrüderhöhe", as it was called at the time, remained in the hands of the Loose family until 1977. When the house was managed by Gustav Loose, there was also a rarity available. You could buy and enjoy the “GuLo” (Gustav Loose) brand cigars produced in-house. The house was in the hands of Helmut Loose for over 30 years, who then sold it to the Marienberg building management company in 1977.

The Berghotel Bärenstein is a popular excursion destination. It is worth eating there again after the change of operator. Be sure to visit the observation tower and walk the circular path.

You have a great view from here (if you don't get there in fog like I did today, but you know it from a few hikes before). Some benches offer space for a rest.

On a clear day you can also see the Fichtelberg and the Klinovic.
