The Bärenstein, the erosion remnant of a former lava flow, consists predominantly of basalt. The table mountain is 898 meters high. The summit trail leads to several worthwhile vantage points. From the summit cross, there is a beautiful view of the Cranzahl drinking water reservoir, which was commissioned in 1952.

In 1903, a mountain hut belonging to the Erzgebirge Association on the summit of Bärenstein formed the nucleus of today's guesthouse and hotel with an observation tower. Ten years later, the hut was expanded into a lodging house. After reunification, the mountain house, now run again as a family business, was reconstructed and reopened in 1992, and renovated again in 2021. The mountain hotel, located at an altitude of 898 meters, offers 22 rustic rooms and, as a special attraction, a 27-meter-high observation tower. On September 11, 1944, the tower was damaged during the air battle over the Ore Mountains ("Black Monday"). Bullet holes can still be seen in the spiral staircase.

The Black Pond can be reached from Crottendorf, Neudorf or Oberwiesenthal on touring skis if there is enough snow. It is at 920 above sea level.

The Bärenstein is 897.8 m high. It is located about two kilometers north of the town of the same name, Bärenstein, in the Erzgebirgskreis. Due to the dense forest cover on the hilltop, the view of the neighboring stations on the Pöhlberg, Scheibeberg and Fichtelberg is no longer possible.

The "König-Albert-Turm" on the 728 m high Spiegelwald is a worthwhile destination at any time of the year. 180 steps lead up to the viewing platform, which can also be reached quickly and easily by lift (suitable for wheelchair users). Located between Grünhain-Beierfeld and Bernsbach, the tower is the only barrier-free viewing tower in the Ore Mountains. @Bonadea there is a 2nd Black Pond. It's in the Elterlein corner. This is your said "Big Pond". The Black Pond here is in Oberwiesenthal am Fichtelberg. I'm there every year. It is fed by moor water from the Zschopau, which also has its source nearby.
