In the Franzosenschlucht near Bad Bentheim you can climb over sandstone rocks and walk through a hilly landscape. Behind the open-air stage in Bad Bentheim there is a forest area that is ideal for a walk and climbing: the Franzosenschlucht. The name comes from the fact that in 1795 French troops conquered Bentheim Castle. The soldiers are said to have set up camp in the hidden gorge. Today a road (B 403) runs through the gorge, with two hills rising on either side. On one is the open-air stage, on the other the forest area, both connected by a bridge. The hills owe their rock formations to a former quarry, the origins of which date back even further than the French siege. Sandstone has been mined in quarries in Bad Bentheim since the 11th century.

The Vechtesee is highly recommended

Lake Vechte is located in the immediate vicinity of Nordhorn's city center. It acts as a buffer reservoir, protecting Nordhorn from flooding. It also serves as a local recreation area with excellent restaurants. There are many recreational opportunities here, such as sailing, surfing, or hiking or cycling around the beautiful Vechte Lake. Pedal boats and rowboats are available for rent at a boat rental shop, allowing you to explore Nordhorn's city center, for example. Tour boats also offer tours through Nordhorn's city center along the Vechte River, which branches off here.

A beautiful cycle path between the Dreiländersee lake near Gronau and Bad Bentheim through the Gildehauser Venn. It leads through a nearly untouched moor and heath landscape. Two viewing platforms offer untouched nature.

The redesigned Reiterbrücke (Equestrian Bridge) was fitted with a flooring made of durable, non-slip plastic planks. The old railing was replaced with a significantly higher one. The bridge, now featuring a significantly wider roadway, allows easy passage for oncoming traffic on the frequently used pedestrian and bicycle path. A ramp was built in the immediate vicinity of the Reiterbrücke. From here, a moderately downward branch provides easy and barrier-free access to the lower pedestrian and bicycle path along Lake Vechte. The perfectly finished Reiterbrücke offers a beautiful view of Lake Vechte and is now another highlight in the water town of Nordhorn.
