Het Springendal is a beautiful nature reserve in the far east of the province of Overijssel, close to the German border. Wonderful hiking and cycling trails lead through extensive forests, through heathland and pastureland, past springs with small ponds, streams with waterfalls and small hills. Het Springendal, located north of Ootmarsum, is so popular with hikers and cyclists because it is essentially closed to motorized vehicles.

The water mill was first mentioned in a document in 1270, and a seizure contract from 1377 also mentions a mill in Lage an der Dinkel. However, it was not until around 200 years later that the then King of Spain, Philip II, as ruler of the Netherlands, granted permission to build a mill on the Dinkel. This was probably a reconstruction or an extension of the existing mill, but the exact details are not known.
