⚠️ Important Safety Information Even though the beach may appear shallow and child-friendly, the Elbe is a flowing body of water with risks: Suction and Swell: Large container ships traveling in the nearby shipping channel towards Hamburg create a strong suction as they pass, pulling water away from the tidal creeks and the beach – and then pushing it back with a powerful wave (swell). Always be vigilant when a large ship passes by. Current: Never underestimate the speed of the Elbe (up to 7 km/h). Swimming in the tidal creeks is usually safe, but you should not swim too far out into the main current.

A tidal creek is a natural waterway in the mudflats or on the beach, created by the tides (ebb and flow). At Krautsand beach, a prominent tidal creek runs parallel to the water's edge.

The Krautsand lighthouse today consists of a distinctive red and white steel lattice upper light (1907) and a modern, fiberglass lower light (1978), which together form a leading line to guide ships safely through the Elbe River. This line is characterized by a synchronized flashing pattern of 8 seconds, designed to facilitate navigation. The old lower light tower was demolished in 1978; the new lower light is a slender fiberglass structure. Krautsand Upper Light (The Visible Landmark): Year Built: 1907. A fantastic cycling and hiking trail leads along here, surrounded by beautiful nature 💚. The beach walk is approximately 6-8 km long, depending on how far you extend it. At high tide, it could be shortened to 2 km. A visit is highly recommended 👍🏼. A visit is recommended at any time of year 👍🏼.

A covered picnic table at Assel harbor – not exactly a harbor view highlight, just an ordinary table with a roof. Practical in the rain, spectacular only as another red dot. Still, it gets likes.
