In the strictest sense of the word definition, however, they are not "atonement crosses" because such crosses were to be erected by the perpetrators - as part of the atonement (penance) for their crime - whereas memorial crosses were erected by people from the victim's immediate environment (often family members, possibly friends or neighbors).

The Bruch moated castle is a lavishly renovated castle complex. Individual tours are possible by prior arrangement. Inside the castle complex there is a beer garden with good opening times!
