An absolutely must-see museum on the original site, complete with original border fortifications. You can walk along the border installation (green belt) and get a sense of what the situation was like back then.

This was the first time I'd ever seen a Stasi tunnel like this. It was fascinating. They'd thought of practically everything. 😬

The Heierkopf has only been accessible again since the border was reopened in the fall of 1989. The border expansion on the hill in the 1950s prompted the construction of a wooden observation tower. After it fell into disrepair and was replaced with massive concrete towers, a nine-meter-high tower made of square prefabricated elements was built in 1978. The high elevation is ideal for wide-area surveillance. From the observation platform, border troops can see not only the GDR restricted area, but also the West German Werra Valley around Bad Sooden-Allendorf. After 1990, the concrete tower was demolished. A reconstruction of the original wooden tower has stood on the Heierkopf since 2015. (...from information board)

What could be more beautiful than a blooming daisy meadow? We were lucky; it's May, and they were blooming. 💚

The path leads through an old quarry. Those coming down the path from the castle should wear sturdy shoes. It's quite steep, and the very muddy path is not recommended in wet conditions. However, the quarry is quite easy to navigate.
