The Hoover Mountain Bike Complex has over three miles of trails open to hikers and mountain bikers, all rated easy or moderate. These trails explore what was once a mining area used by Hoover Color Corporation and have informational signage about the area's past. You'll see colorful rock walls and mountain vistas. The trails in this park can make for a fun detour and a change of pace if you choose to add them to an adventure along the paved New River Trail.

The Whistle Stop Inn is a small, one-unit, nightly rental that is just steps away from New River Trail. The building was originally used as the city of Allisonia's train station in the late 1800's. It sleeps 2 to 4 people and can be reserved through New River Retreat's website.

Little Dry Run Wilderness provides a glimpse into this historical Virginia landscape. While Hemlock trees in the George Washington National Forest and certain areas of the Jefferson are gradually succumbing to the Wooly Adelgid, those within the sheltered drainage of Little Dry Run are quite healthy. The trails in the Little Dry Run Wilderness are maintained through the volunteer efforts of the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS).

Dickey Gap is a mountain pass where the Appalichain Trail skrits the Sugar Grove Highway. If you ride past here, you might see a thru-hiker or two hitching a ride to town. It's easy to appreciate the rolling hills here as you travel down the road.

Sugar Grove is a small town tucked in the Appalachian Mountains. There is a market here to grab a snack at, but not too much else. This town is the gateway to the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area and sometimes a stopover for adventures and Appalachian Trail hikers.

Spring Valley Christmas Tree Farm offers nice views from Spring Valley Road of very satisfying rows of Christmas trees. The farm is part of the Spring Valley Rural Historic District.

Turkey Fork is the junction between Spring Valley Road and Elk Creek Parkway roads. There is not much here, but heading north brings bikers into Little Dry Run Wilderness, and heading south brings bikers back down to farm land, and after 12 miles, the town of Independence.

Fries, established in 1900 and pronounced "freeze," sits on the banks of the New River and is popular amongst recreationalists. The New River Trail State Park, extending for 57 miles, begins in downtown Fries.
